Do You Vomit When You Die

LIPPI and magic of Navitar

A masterpiece for Milan at the Diocesan Museum
The Nativity of Filippo Lippi (1406-1469)
16 November 2010 - January 30, 2011

The Nativity of St. George and St. Vincent Ferrer offers a fascinating testimony of painting by Filippo Lippi, one of the leaders of the Tuscan Renaissance. The table was originally in the refectory of the convent of San Domenico in Prato and is now in the Museo Civico of the city.
The board takes a person much loved by the painter, especially in his mature work, and follows the iconographic tradition inspired by the famous late-fourteenth-century text of the Revelations of St. Bridget of Sweden: the Virgin is kneeling before the Child, wrapped in swaddling clothes and placed directly on the surface of the mother, whose delicate profile reproduces the likeness of Lucrezia Buti, a nun loved by Lippi. The extraordinary figure of St. Joseph, concentrated and absorbed in prayer, move the theme of the Nativity in the Adoration of the Child. The intense scene takes place in a fairytale land, with large rocky outcrops degrading the memory of Giotto, from which peep out, not only the shepherds and angels, as well as small bushes and flowers minutely described, such as myrtle el'agrifoglio with obvious symbolic allusions.
